Terms of Service

Effective: April 2, 2026

1. Acceptance

By accessing or using highlight.page ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. By registering, you represent that you meet this requirement and that the information you provide is accurate.

3. Your Account

  • You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your credentials.
  • You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account.
  • Notify us immediately at [email protected] if you suspect unauthorized use.
  • One person may hold one account. Creating duplicate accounts to evade enforcement action is prohibited.

3.1 Username Policy

Usernames are provided for your use on the Service and are not your property. highlight.page reserves the right to change, reclaim, or reassign any username at its sole discretion, without prior notice, in the following circumstances:

  • The username infringes or is likely to infringe a third party's trademark, trade name, or other intellectual property rights.
  • The username is being used to impersonate another person, organization, or brand.
  • The account has had no login activity for 180 or more consecutive days (dormant account). We will make a reasonable effort to notify you by email at least 60 days before reclaiming a dormant username.
  • The username violates applicable law or any provision of these Terms.
  • highlight.page determines there is another reasonable basis for reclaiming the username.

If your username is reclaimed, you may choose a new available username. No compensation will be provided for a reclaimed username.

4. User-Generated Content

You retain ownership of content you create ("User Content"). By publishing User Content you grant highlight.page a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, display, and distribute that content solely to operate the Service.

You are solely responsible for your User Content. highlight.page does not pre-screen content but reserves the right to remove any content at its discretion.

5. Prohibited Content and Conduct

The following are strictly prohibited:

5.1 Illegal Content

  • Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) or any content that sexualizes minors.
  • Content that facilitates or promotes terrorism, mass violence, or hate crimes.
  • Content that violates applicable laws in Japan or the user's jurisdiction.

5.2 Harmful or Deceptive Content

  • Impersonation of individuals, organizations, or brands.
  • Phishing, malware distribution, or fraudulent schemes.
  • Deliberately false information likely to cause real-world harm.
  • Non-consensual intimate imagery.

5.3 Spam and Platform Abuse

  • Creating accounts primarily to distribute unsolicited commercial content.
  • Automated account creation or scraping without authorization.
  • Attempting to circumvent security measures or access controls.

5.4 Harassment

  • Targeted harassment, doxxing, or incitement to harass a specific person.
  • Content designed to demean or threaten individuals based on protected characteristics.

6. Enforcement and Account Actions

When a potential violation is identified — via user report, automated detection, or proactive review — we apply the following tiered approach:

6.1 Content Removal

For isolated or minor violations, we may remove the offending content and notify you by email. Your account remains active while you address the issue.

6.2 Profile Under Review (Visibility: UNDER_REVIEW)

For moderate violations or where broader review is warranted, your public profile page will be hidden from visitors while we investigate. You retain access to your dashboard. We will notify you by email within 48 hours with the reason.

Typical triggers: reported impersonation, suspected spam network, significant copyright complaint.

6.3 Temporary Suspension

For repeated or escalating violations, we may suspend your account for up to 30 days. During suspension you cannot log in or edit your profile.

6.4 Permanent Ban

Permanent bans are applied for:

  • CSAM or content sexualizing minors (immediate, no prior warning).
  • Terrorism-related content (immediate, no prior warning).
  • Phishing or malware distribution.
  • Repeated serious violations after temporary suspension.
  • Creating a new account after a permanent ban.

All associated accounts sharing verified identity or infrastructure may also be banned.

6.5 Enforcement Timeline

We aim to complete initial review within 48 hours of a report or flag.

Notifications will be sent to the email address on file with the reason, relevant policy section, and (where permitted by law) the nature of the reported content.

7. Appeals

If you believe an enforcement action was incorrect, you may submit an appeal within 14 calendar days of receiving the notification.

7.1 How to Appeal

Send an email to [email protected] with:

  • Your username and the email on your account.
  • The action you are appealing and the date of notification.
  • A clear statement of why you believe the action was in error.
  • Any supporting evidence (e.g., proof of identity for impersonation disputes).

7.2 Review Process

We will acknowledge receipt within 2 business days. A separate reviewer (not the original moderator) will assess the appeal and respond within 7 business days.

7.3 Outcomes

  • Accepted: The action will be reversed or reduced and your account reinstated as appropriate.
  • Rejected: The original decision stands. We will explain the reason.

The appeal decision is final for that incident.

7.4 Non-Appealable Actions

Actions taken in response to CSAM, terrorism-related content, or court orders are not eligible for appeal through this process.

8. Intellectual Property

The highlight.page name, logo, and all original service content are the property of highlight.page and may not be used without written permission. User Content remains the property of its creators subject to the licence in Section 4.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee uninterrupted availability or that the Service will be error-free.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, highlight.page shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability shall not exceed the amount paid by you (if any) in the 12 months preceding the claim.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email or a prominent notice on the Service at least 14 days before taking effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.

12. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Japan. Any dispute shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Tokyo District Court as the court of first instance.
